I had been in and out of big box gyms for years.  I was bored out of my mind and unmotivated.  I decided to hire a trainer at the big box gym I was at, and asked them to give me a trainer that would keep my short attention span in check with something different.  I was paired with Chuck, because he was certified in a different kind of training called CrossFit.  After several more sessions of personal training with Chuck he left the big box gym and decided to start training CrossFit out of his garage.

The weekend I did my intro was the same weekend he opened the current CrossFit FerVor location.  I was borderline hypertensive and “fluffy” when I started training at FerVor.  My doctor even wanted to put me on medication.  Within a few months of training I had lost ten pounds of fat.  I was strong, confident and my blood pressure was lowered to a healthy level.  After a year of training I completed my CrossFit Level 1 (CFL1) certification and became a trainer.  CrossFit has been able to hold my interest for going on two years now.  Along this journey I have also met some awesome people that I have a lot of fun with now at FerVor.

I’ve really enjoyed being able to help people reach their goals, and create new ones every day. Anyone who is familiar with “The Biggest Loser” knows Personal Trainer Bob Harper.  Those of you who are unfamiliar with CrossFit may not know that he has embraced CrossFit as his training method.  He and his own personal trainer, Sam Upton, recently went to get their CrossFit Level 1 Cert.

Beauty in Strength

There is a fair amount of misconception among the general public that lifting weights will make women look bulky like the body builders or like a man.  The Fact is Women were made to be strong and athletic.  They were designed to be able to lift and carry things and when they lift they look like women.  Curvy and beautiful.  Women who are huge bulky “body builders” have had to supplement their training with substances that have them grow in unnatural ways.  This WILL NEVER happen by accident.  Lift hard, work hard, train hard and display the natural beauty that is aching to reveal itself to you.

Chuck Swain

Hello my name is Chuck Swain. Several years ago I was much like you.  I was checking out this CrossFit thing I had heard about.  I was doing well on a number of fronts:  My family and I lived in an awesome home in Sydney Australia.  I had an excellent job that I was good at and I was able to travel to exotic locations like New Zealand and the Phillipines quite regularly.

But… and here is the big one…I was in terrible shape physically.  Fifty pounds overweight, I had obstructive sleep apnea for years and hypertension.  My job kept me on the road (or in the air) so pre-prepared meal planning was not in the cards.  I didn’t have much time to commit to improving my health (I know how dumb that sounds) and I certainly wasn’t in shape enough to take on something as challenging as CrossFit.

But that is what I did…I committed to just 3 hours per week and found gyms where I traveled or used CrossFit style programming in hotel gyms to get my 3 per week done.

Long story short, I lost the fat, added some muscle, was deemed (in a sleep study) to no longer have apnea (after 6 years on the CPAP) and fell in love with CrossFit.  I became a CrossFit Level 1 (CFL1) certified coach and added certifications in CrossFit Endurance (CFE), NESTA certified as a Personal Fitness Trainer (PFT), CrossFit Strongman Certification with Rob Orlando and CrossFit Olympic lifting. Ran my first half marathon (Sydney) and my first full marathon (Dallas).  I have given up the corporate thing to pursue my passion of helping others to improve their performance and their lives.  Now at the age of 48 I have devoted myself to being the Best Trainer in Mansfield, Texas.  I am constantly learning new skills because you can’t give what you don’t have!  I love watching the people I coach accomplish their goals, live more fulfilling lives as they develop new capacity and healthier self images.

Mel before CrossFit.

I’m just your average 39 year old female. I work full time, maintain my house, take care of our 4 kids, and keep my hubby happy (well sometimes!). I had been over weight for 15 years when Chuck asked me to do CrossFit with him. I very reluctantly agreed, thinking that I’d do it a few times and quit. I know, great commitment huh? Well, my first time walking into a CrossFit gym was in Castle Hill, New South Wales in Australia. When we walked up I saw this red headed muscle guy and a few very fit people working out. I knew it was not a place for me. Chuck talked with Rob (aka the Red Bull) and was like a kid in a candy store. He was so excited and all I kept thinking was this is not a place for me, I do not belong here. Then Chuck told Rob that I said I was too fat to be there. I was mortified that Chuck had shared that bit of info, but Rob didn’t miss a beat and said “Well I can’t think of a better place for her to be”. That was the beginning for me. We came back for our intro a few days later.

When I began this journey, I weighed 217 pounds. I had never lifted weights and I avoided running at all cost. CrossFit has not only changed me physically (I have dropped 42 pounds and 4 dress sizes) but it has also improved my confidence inside and outside the gym. Being able to deadlift 250 pounds is a pretty cool thing to be able to say. And now I am a CrossFit Level One Trainer, something I never even thought I could be.

My favorite thing about CrossFit is that it truly is for everyone. All of the workouts are programmed for elite athletes but are infinitely scalable for anyone at any fitness level.

This last year I have shared my experience with anyone who would listen. Now that we have CrossFit FerVor, in Mansfield, Texas, I am able to do this everyday. I get to be a part of improving the lives of those around me and I can’t think of anything I would rather be doing.

I hope you, too, will come by and give us a go. The worst thing that can happen is you don’t like it. No harm in that! However, the best thing that could happen is you find a place that accepts you where you are and works right along with you to ensure you achieve your goals!

Welcome!!

Welcome to CrossFit Fervor.  We are not just another gym.  We are a World Class Training facility located in Mansfield, Texas 76063.  Here you will find an inviting environment, professional coaching and state of the art programming designed to help you achieve your goals in the shortest possible time.  Safety, Efficiency and Effectiveness are the cornerstones of our program.

You will receive instruction on fundamental human movement (such as squatting and how to pick things up off the ground), progressing into more complex exercises and movements (like gymnastics moves, handstands, pull ups, Olympic lifts, Russian kettlebells, Atlas stones, essentially all the tools necessary to build elite fitness).  All movements are infinitely scalable.  So the training will meet you where you are and take you as far as you are willing to go.

The training is beneficial for everyone from the 84 year old great grandmother, the severely overweight, and the elite athlete (trust me if you believe you are fit now, you can move to an entirely new level).  We have trained persons in each of these categories and more. The needs of these groups do not differ by type but by degree.

If you are here, you have likely tried to make improvements before.  The membership at the local globo gym having too much activity and equipment but yielding too little results.  Possibly you have tried a boot camp or used a personal trainer, who was at least a reason to come to the gym but was unable to quickly achieve the results you sought or you quickly reached a plateau in your performance or body re-composition goals.
